Nikko Saturnus Mercialo (Saint Saturday) is a Vancouver-based painter, sculptor, photographer, designer and entrepreneur. Blending the opulent dramatics of Western tradition with contemporary aesthetics, he explores the paradox of strength and vulnerability plated in the human experience.
His work is layered and intense, evoking mood-drenched sensations of mystery, longing, loneliness, passion and elation which are simultaneously atmospheric and incendiary. Elements of traditional symbolism, realism, and abstraction are entwined in dynamic narratives, altogether subverting conventional style. He composes alluring and almost psychedelic characters — ethereal and graceful — in motion through a dark, glittering dreamworld where the laws of gravity are broken and the places depicted are unclear planes of existence.
Mercialo aims to conjure a tidal sweep of emotions and speculative contemplation in the same breath, inviting viewers to discover something of themselves in the space between.
His creative production is informed in part by a background in psychology and media, as well as a neurological condition called Synesthesia - a “short circuit” between the audio and visual centers of the brain that causes him to literally see sound as waves and blasts of colour.
He is also draws energy from ascension against adversity. After years of struggle with depression and extreme lifestyle risks, Nikko turned to art as a way resolve inner conflicts with a world that is both brutal and beautiful. Finding transformation through his work he continues to embrace a Renaissance discipline, expanding relentlessly across new mediums and methods to reach audiences around the world. His goal is to infuse every endeavor with a touch of the mythic that ignites the spirit and motivates the senses.
